Since then, he and his wife Gail have raised a family of 4 children, who have all made Mount Isa their home.

In all, Ron worked for 20 years at MIM. as a miner, shift-boss, and a Safety Officer. In 1975, he bought a taxi, and spent seven years as the manager of the taxi company.

Ron's first 25 years in the city saw him involved in many community and sporting activities. From pre-school commitees to president of the Irish Club, from playing sport to representing North West Queensland on the Queensland Soccer Council.

A record of Vision and Achievement

In 1985, Ron was elected to the Mount Isa City Council, and in 1990 became Mayor. He was the founder of the Mount Isa Townsville Economic Zone, and in 1995 started the Mining Expo.

He was responsible for bringing the Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health to Mount Isa, for building the Riversleigh Fossils Centre, and physically led the construction of the Hard Times Mine at Outback at Isa for a number of years, up until the present day.
